Hello Anon, I hope you won't mind if I screenshot pieces of your ask, I read it but my muse vaulted over your first 3 questions and then took off on your 4.1, and now here we are, so I'm just going to chop these up and post them depending on what I can come up with.
This started out with TBTP!Shunsui never getting his memories and then kind of spiralled. He still doesn't get his memories but... well, you'll see. It really ran away from me lmao. No thoughts behind it, just vibes, I hammered this out in like fifteen minutes and it felt like a fever dream.
Starrk would definitely have complicated feelings about it. Like at the start when he agreed to go back, I think a part of him even then expected for the entire thing to end with his death, even if they manage to neutralize Aizen and defeat the Wandenreich, but whether or not he manages to survive it all, he definitely has no plans to get together with TBTP!Shunsui.
For one, obviously they're not the same person. I wouldn't say they're completely different, and I imagine TBTP!Shunsui would be a lot closer to Winter War!Shunsui, whom Starrk had met first. But TYBW!Shunsui is the one Starrk knew best, and TYBW!Shunsui suffered quite a few losses in a very short time. Like to Shinigami, even a hundred years probably isn't that much, especially to one who's already lived over a thousand years. But TYBW!Shunsui lost everyone he'd known for a thousand years in like the space of a week, he lost his mentor, he lost his closest friend, and on top of all that, he had the weight of a war fuelled by a grudge a thousand years in the making dumped on his shoulders, he had the duties of Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 dumped on him, he had the deaths of literal thousands of Shinigami dumped on him, and then in this AU he had to be the one to carry everyone else through another 7 years of waging an endless bloody war that after a certain point neither side was ever going to win, but he had no way of stopping it either.
That sort of thing would take its toll on anyone. TYBW!Shunsui was a man changed by loss and grief and more responsibilities than he'd ever wanted. I imagine he would've had very little time or cause to still remember how to be the person he was before the Quincy War when he still had it in him to relax and enjoy life.
But I also imagine that Starrk being there had helped. Starrk has always been a quick learner, and it's not like he'd really known anyone there save Shunsui. He stuck close to his Shinigami, watched and learnd the way Shunsui strategized for each assault and skirmish, contributed what he could where he could, pitched in by keeping the Fourth Divison alive and functioning, shouldered some of that weight by finally wielding all his strength and mowing down entire battlefields of Quincy on his own just so other Shinigami wouldn't have to and Shunsui would thereby have one less thing to worry about.
And in the precious stolen moments in-between, Shunsui had someone to go home with, someone who guarded him while he slept, someone to distract him from the war (from his failure to protect yet more Shinigami fallen in battle under his command), someone to sit beside who knew the same kind of loneliness and didn't recoil from it, who was content to hold him and share in his silence when he just needed a moment to breathe.
I imagine there wouldn't have been many things to be happy about, but I think they'd still manage to carve out some happiness between them. Starrk had known very little of things like human food and clothes and games and books. Shunsui had been delighted to introduce whatever he could to him. They learned about each other, about their similarities and differences, about their strengths and weakness and hopes and fears, secrets exchanged in the dead of night in the safety of a shared office, a shared bed, a shared home. And even in the midst of a war and so much death and destruction, they managed to build something beautiful and strong, something that would've been long-lasting too under any other circumstances.
Because then Shunsui dies, a year before the true end of the war, and Starrk had perhaps not seen it coming even though there was never any real guarantee on a battlefield, but it had also been an unspoken certainty of his, something he knew the way he knew bones were breakable and blood was red and murder was easy--the day Kyouraku Shunsui dies would be the day Coyote Starrk would also fall. With any luck, Shunsui would only die over his dead body, but fortune has never favoured Starrk, and he'd figured the other way was fine too. That way, Starrk wouldn't be yet another person in a long line of people to have left Shunsui behind and alone once again, and he'd thought it would make no real difference. If Shunsui dies, Starrk would surely be minutes behind, by his own hand or otherwise.
That doesn't happen. It doesn't happen because the rest of the Gotei had gotten over any qualms they might've had about working with an Arrancar or even Aizen's former Primera Espada years ago, and besides, Starrk had already broken all the known rules and beliefs several years back by becoming a whole soul and evolving into something no one had ever seen before. He couldn't really be considered a Hollow anymore, for all that there was no other name for him either. And with all that he'd done - following Shunsui into battles and meetings and everything in-between with the kind of steadfast devotion the tide held for the moon, burning the midnight oil right alongside all the other captains and lieutenants because even a hopeless war generated paperwork and headaches as much as it did low supplies and emergency triage and lists and lists of dead, powering through enemy forces to save even just one more Shinigami with the kind of firepower rivalled only by the likes of Kurosaki Ichigo and Aizen Sousuke, and carrying the Fourth on his back by sheer force of will and a truly terrifying mind that had soaked up every medical text he'd had time to read and every medical procedure he'd had time to learn or extrapolate or straight-up invent out of fatal necessity - Starrk had long become a pillar the Gotei 13 couldn't do without, a figure at their helm as familiar and reassuring as the long unwavering shadow Kyouraku had cast. And in the devastating wake of even their Captain-Commander's death, with only a handful of captains and their squads remaining, they couldn't afford another titanic loss on its heels.
And, as Hirako had been the one to point out, all glittering ruthless eyes borne from desperation and pragmatism--Kyouraku Shunsui had protected Soul Society with his very last breath; if they were to ever meet again, would Starrk even be able to look Shunsui in the eye if he wouldn't even stick around to try and defend the place and people Shunsui had loved enough to die for?
(A year later, Mimihagi would use the exact same argument to receive the answer he needed to send the second envoy the Soul King had chosen back in time to save the world.)
(Perhaps the lesson Starrk had learnt best at Shunsui's side had been the one of duty. Or perhaps it had been the one Shunsui hadn't even meant to teach but Starrk had learnt anyway, had held closest to his heart, the one of love.
They were about the same thing in the end, when it came to what Starrk would do for Shunsui.)
Hirako had even dragged Ichigo to stand before him, Isane too, each and every last person Starrk would even nominally call a comrade and was still alive--Hirako had put them all in front of him, and then he'd asked if Starrk could really go to his grave in peace.
The bastard had gotten his way in the end, and Starrk had never come as close to hitting someone unprovoked as he had right then. He'd been left the sole survivor once again, left to soldier on alone, and some days, he has no idea how he keeps going.
(Some days, Starrk had wondered, still wonders, if Shunsui had known his death was coming, or had known what would happen should his death come to pass, so he had made⊠arrangements accordingly. Most days, Starrk knows it's best not to know the answer because it would probably be the one thing he would never be able to forgive Shunsui for.)
So Starrk had hung on for another year and done his best for what was left of the Shinigami, for the dwindling pockets of civilians, for Kurosaki Ichigo. Anyone with eyes could tell though, that he'd just been waiting until the war was over one way or another, until the day he could lie down and not wake up again.
Of course, as it turned out, he wasn't even allowed that much, and a lifetime later, Starrk is still alive because death just won't take him, or he just won't die.
He has zero desire to even look at TBTP!Shunsui. The first time he has to anyway and sees two eyes instead of one, it's like a knife to the gut. They're lighter too, somehow, without the void of grief and exhaustion and quiet despair bruising their depths. His gaze still holds a weight to it, he's still loved and lost before, he's still lived a thousand years with all the joys and sorrows that entails, but he hasn't lost everything, hasn't lost those dearest to him, hasn't had to pick himself up and force himself to march on anyway towards a dead-end future, and for a moment, it's like Starrk is looking at a stranger.
He thinks, randomly, bizarrely, in those first few minutes of their second first meeting, that it's a good thing he always wears gloves when he goes out.
He thinks, madly, nonsensically, that if he were to touch this Shunsui now, it would stain him black with desolation, or red with blood that would never run dry.
He thinks, abruptly, hysterically, that he'd somehow forgotten the hole Shunsui had left behind with his death, as if the past year had numbed him so thoroughly that it had frozen even his grief in its tracks, except it all comes roaring back now, an empty pit that's always been waiting for him to remember it, threatening to drown him whole. Frankly, he would welcome it if he thought it would kill him once and for all.
It's frighteningly easy to pretend nothing is wrong. Perhaps it shouldn't be. He's never been one to emote outwardly, always been good at displaying nothing but impassivity without even trying, to the point where Shunsui had remarked more than once that it was difficult to read him (and then pouted and asked what Starrk was thinking - don't leave him out, it's hurtful - and he'd always want to know even when Starrk was clearly thinking of nothing important at all).
He greets this Shunsui politely, with the courtesy an Academy student should afford a captain, he makes smalltalk as necessary, he doesn't look at anyone in particular but also doesn't avoid anyone's gaze, and then he lets himself fall silent as Ichigo draws everyone's attention again with no deliberate effort whatsoever when he blows up at something his cousin says.
It's easy to fade into the background after that, to fade into himself, retreating into his own mind with the ease of long practice. Once upon a time, he could spend years like this, buried so deep in his own head that when he surfaced and became aware again, the sand dunes would've shifted and changed, and new mountains of bones would've already formed around him.
The few times eyes turn back to him, he nods in all the right places and responds at all the right times and pretends the world hasn't become white noise in his ears.
(He'd had these episodes a few times during the war, never when there was immediate work to be done or a fight to be fought, but in their downtime, it would sneak up on him. It had never lasted more than a couple hours at a time, but he'd scared the hell out of Shunsui the first time, had found himself at the Fourth when he'd woken, but then he'd explained, and Shunsui's expression had been unreadable but his eyes had looked pained. He'd shaken his head when Starrk had said he could leave him alone or just smack him out of it, either way he'd come back sooner or later, but Shunsui had refused, and every time it had happened after that, Starrk would wake with his head pillowed against Shunsui's shoulder or chest or thigh, Shunsui's arm wrapped around him or his bulk at his back and a blanket draped around them both, warm and comfortable and never alone.)
(He is alone again now, and he doesn't understand why it's so difficult to relearn something he had known for far longer than he hadn't.)
He's here to check Fujiwara's Hohou - Shunsui's cousin, Shunsui never mentioned her, she must've died long ago in the future - so he does that when he's cued and works her through the problem and suggests a few exercises, and that's that. He practically sleepwalks through the rest of this little gathering, barely manages to feel vaguely relieved when it looks like they can all finally part ways, and hazily wonders if he can get away with booting Ichigo back to his own room for the night. He's pretty sure he's going to end up scaring the kid if he falls even further into his own mind.
Then Shiba Kaien does him a favour out of the blue, nagging Ichigo until the kid snaps and irritably agrees to spend the night at his family's compound. Distantly, Starrk is aware of being invited as well, but that's easy enough to refuse, citing an exam in the morning - or maybe he says assignment due, he's not sure - and the Clan Head says next time then, and- and-
He blinks and it's time to go. Nothing seems amiss so he inclines his head at the captains and lieutenant, bids Ichigo and Fujiwara farewell, and then takes his leave in a flash of Shunpou.
Starrk has seconds to feel nebulously pleased with himself, another second to remind himself to avoid the Eighth like the plague from here on out, and then even that's gone as he locks himself in his room, and the rest of the night is lost. He is more than happy to lose it.
He'd had exactly zero presence of mind to catch the way Kyouraku Shunsui had been staring - if discreetly - at him the entire time, from under his hat or out of the corner of his eye, and by the end of the entire encounter, the man had even shaken his kimono over his hands to hide the way they'd slowly curled into white-knuckled fists.
Shunsui doesn't know how no one else had felt it, bleeding into the air like a severed artery--a bottomless chasm of loneliness and grief that had felt like it should've been screaming with the agony of it, except there'd only been the deafening silence of barren wastelands, an emptiness reflected in Starrkâs perfectly blank eyes and perfectly sculpted non-expression, and Shunsui doesn't understand why he alone had evidently just taken a metaphorical dive straight into the man's very soul.
(Starrk would've, if he'd noticed. After all, a lifetime ago, Kyoukotsu had loved bringing his wolves back to her soulscape to play with, and Katen had often visited his soulscape in turn for tea and conversation. His and Shunsui's souls had long learned to recognize each other, mingling in a way that had transcended all possible boundaries, and in the face of that, what did a little thing like time and space matter?)
When Starrk had left, Shunsui had almost followed, had wanted to with an instinctual sort of urgency he couldn't even explain to himself, let alone anyone else. Several times, he'd almost reached out while the others were talking, to provide comfort perhaps, or to take some of the pain even, and it had only been the equally intuitive certainty that doing so would break something in Starrk that had ultimately stopped him each time.
"Kyouraku, is something wrong?" Ukitake asks once the others are all gone, because of course his best friend had noticed something off with Shunsui, even if not with Starrk.
Shunsui reaches up and tugs on the brim of his hat and doesn't know how to explain that wrong could not even begin to cover whatever the hell had just happened.
His insides are still shuddering like they've been ripped out very slowly. He still wants to run all the way to the Academy this instant. And he feels-
He feels inexplicably like he's lost something beloved and doesn't know if he'll ever get it back.

SQH Fanfic Concept
SQH kinda angst fanfic where he feels completely out of place with the Peak Lords. Then he goes to the Demon Realm and feels additionally out of place. Especially with LBH, MBJ, and Sha Hualing.
So he decides to start periodically fucking off to different places in small outings. Just little few day trips. And he begins building it into his schedule. So people think heâs somewhere else. And NO ONE CATCHES ON. For months, even maybe a few years. Heâd disappear on an excursion once every other month, then every month, then every week. He ends up developing a pseudo-identity. Heâs actually enjoying it. And visits different people in smaller villages. And at some point, he decides to maybe leave for longer.
The person who actually notices after a long time is Mobei Jun. SQH had enlisted some demons and disciples to shoulder his responsibilities while heâs gone and finally MBJ noticed a small error/tick or whatever that SQH would never do. And he raises the alarm. Even the Peak Lords panic. They begin searching for SQH but home dawg is currently starting on a 2 week adventure.
SQH is eventually found after people who met SQHâs pseudo-identity point MBJ and the others to him. Heâs prolly like vibing in a lovely little cottage that heâs renovated as homebase. Maybe even developed some talismans or smthing to teleport there. MBJ finds him likeâŠ. Idk watering w garden or smthing. Heâs outside. And SQH is so at peace and is smiling n shit m. MBJ is shocked. He never thought SQH could even make a face like that.
Maybe SQH finds a kid who is a lil rascal but is overprotective of him. Maybe jokingly calls him A-Niang. People kind of know that SQH is lying about who he is but theyâve been assuming itâs because of some shit. They want to protective SQH. An elderly woman berated MBJ âfor scaring his husband awayâ. She rants about SQH being a catch and MBJ is a fool for not paying attention. âHappy wife. Happy life. Yknow?â MBJ is confused but it turns out that SQH starts gushing about him whenever heâs too tired or drunk. So everyone can tell who he is in the village. The old woman demands that he woos SQH back.
Cue a whole redemption arc of MBJ paying attention to him. MBJ actually writes a letter formally berating the Peak Lords and especially SQQ who was suppose to be SQH bff. He starts defending SQH as SQH remains oblivious.
On SQHâs side, he was fuming. He just wanted peace. He wanted to be left alone. The kid heâs been watching over is asking about MBJ. He tells the kids that MBJ is his boss that he thought wouldnât notice him gone. The kid hugs and says something along the lines of âWell SQH is so cool he canât be forgettable and those who forget him as dumbassesâ which makes SQH laugh.
Timeskip occurs and SQHâs two week trip has now lasted three. Heâs kind of gotten used to MBJ helping him. At one emotionally charged moment, he cups MBJâs face in his hands and has the urge to just kiss his king for being so silly. The kid noticed how MBJâs actions mirror someone courting another. The old lady tells tum itâs because MBJ is courting SQH. The kid snarks about how SQH doesnât even reciprocate but the old lady misses that he doesnât even realize what MBJ is doing.
(Note: this is where I stopped rambling but indulgent concept for myself lol)

Whyâd You Only Call Me When Youâre High?
Fandom: Blue Lock
Characters: Nagi x reader
Based on the song of Arctic monkeysđ€
Angst i guess?
------------â---------------------------------------
The phone buzzed on your nightstand for the third time in a row. You stared at the screen, the light illuminating your dark room as Nagiâs name flashed across the display. A sigh escaped your lips. You didnât even need to pick up to know where this was going.
You swiped to answer anyway.
â...Hey,â his voice came through, slightly slurred, dragging the word out like he had all the time in the world.
âNagi,â you started, already weary. âWhat time is it?â
A faint chuckle. âUh, I dunno. Late?â
âIt's 2 a.m.,â you clarified, rubbing your temples.
âYeah, so? Youâre awake,â he said lazily, as if that was a perfectly valid excuse for waking you.
You heard the familiar noise of background chatter and the bass of some party music, muffled but ever-present. Nagi mustâve stepped out for some airâor, more likely, to make this call.
âWhat do you want?â you asked, trying to sound indifferent, though a twinge of irritation bled through.
âJust wanted to hear your voice.â His tone was nonchalant, but you knew better.
âAre you drunk?â
âMaybe,â he admitted with a low laugh. âDoes it matter?â
Yes. It mattered a lot.
This wasnât the first time this had happened. The calls always came late at night, right when you were starting to feel okay about the distance that had grown between you two. Nagi was someone you once thought you understood completelyâa quiet, laid-back guy who didnât seem to need much from the world. But lately, heâd become a ghost of himself during the day and a restless spirit at night, always reaching out to you when he wasnât sober enough to hold back.
âIâm not doing this again, Nagi,â you said, pinching the bridge of your nose.
âDoing what?â
âThisâwhatever this is. You call me at ungodly hours, barely coherent, and expect me to just... what? Wait for you?â
He was silent for a beat, the sound of the distant party filling the gap.
âDunno,â he said finally. âI justâeverythingâs loud here. Youâre not.â
It wasnât a compliment; it was an excuse.
âDo you even realize how unfair this is?â you continued, feeling a knot of frustration and sadness build in your chest. âYou ignore me all day, but when youâre high, Iâm suddenly worth your time?â
âIâm not ignoring you,â he mumbled, but the words were weak, lacking conviction.
âYou couldâve fooled me,â you said, voice cracking slightly despite your efforts to stay calm.
There was another pause. You could hear him shifting, maybe leaning against a wall or the side of a car.
â...Iâm sorry,â he said quietly, and for the first time, it sounded genuine.
But it wasnât enough.
âNagi, you canât keep doing this. Calling me in the middle of the night doesnât fix anything. It just hurts more.â
âI donât know what else to do,â he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
The vulnerability in his tone made your resolve falter. You hated how much you still cared, how much you wanted to believe there was something salvageable in whatever was left between you two.
âWhy do you even call me?â you asked softly, more for yourself than for him.
âBecause youâre the only one who gets me,â he said without hesitation. âEveryone else... itâs just noise.â
You closed your eyes, letting his words sink in. It wasnât the first time heâd said something like this, but tonight, it hit differently. Maybe because you wanted to believe it was true.
âThen why donât you talk to me during the day? When youâre sober?â
âI donât know how,â he admitted. âI suck at... everything, really.â
A bitter laugh escaped you. âYou donât suck at soccer.â
âYeah, well. Thatâs the only thing Iâm good at.â
The conversation drifted into silence, heavy with unspoken emotions. Part of you wanted to hang up, to finally put an end to this exhausting cycle. But another part of youâthe part that still cared too muchâcouldnât bring yourself to let go.
âNagi,â you said finally, voice softer now. âI canât keep being your escape. I need more than this. We both do.â
He didnât respond right away, and for a moment, you thought he mightâve hung up. But then he spoke, his voice so quiet you almost didnât hear it.
âI donât wanna lose you.â
The words hung in the air like a fragile promise, one that you werenât sure he could keep.
âYou already have,â you said, tears stinging your eyes as you ended the call.
The phone sat silent on your nightstand, no longer buzzing with calls or texts. You stared at it for a while, wondering if heâd try again. But deep down, you knew this was the end of the lineâat least for now.
Nagi mightâve needed you, but you needed someone who could show up when it mattered most.
And tonight, you chose yourself.

i think this is a little unfair as a critique because i generally do not see much value in being like "well i wish this story had just been a completely different thing instead of the story it was" like there are better ways to talk about how a narrative could be improved on its own merits rather than just saying "well do something different". BUT this is my blog where i get to say what i want and so: read the rest at your own risk wherein i talk about what i might have preferred to see with viktor's storyline
i think that if they were going to dispense with the variations of viktor's prior lore - which is totally fine to do tbh! - but they wanted to still stick to him feeling more alienated and indifferent to human needs/suffering but also superior to them and kind of outside of time without fully leaning into the timeloop cyborgism of it all, it would have been wise to make him somewhat more nihilistic on the order of doctor manhattan?
a: if he were outside of time in the way that doctor manhattan is, it would avoid the issue of a time loop (which generally tends to damage to a story in my opinion) and would still permit for some kind of epiphany about love a la what happens with doctor manhattan and laurie juspeczyk. it also would maintain viktor's ability to see into other people's pasts and memories or to walk among them in those past places. this might have even allowed us to get a fuller and more sensitive picture of sky as a person independent of viktor once he was unstuck from time or in quantum time or etc!
b: jon osterman is a physicist and, like viktor, goes through a transformation that basically makes him feel completely distant from humans and as if their fates are fixed in a hopeless cycle, he's obsessive about his research, and he generally behaves as if humanity is somewhat beneath him because of how he experiences time and space
obviously there are some differences. doctor manhattan never aims to build a perfect world of flawless nonsuffering. he decides to abandon humanity altogether, and the person with the questionable morals driven by a raging ego is adrian veidt, but honestly you could just blend the archetypes of the two and get a clearer sense of direction for viktor's story.
like obviously this is just my vibe. i think i like this better because doctor manhattan and adrian veidt, both of whom are deeply selfish and in veidt's case egomaniacal about how to 'fix' the world, are still realized in ways where both characters feels more complicated than how viktor's story played out in arcane. like even leaving off the league lore about him, i think the show either didn't have enough time to fully actualize the struggle in him between wanting to help and being sure he knew better than everyone else about how to help, or it was always just going to be too cartoon-villain simplistic with his army of evil robots. i think the latter is unlikely given that they worked pretty hard to paint silco, jinx, and more or less everyone else in the undercity in many shades of grey but who knows!
like most of what frustrated me by the end about viktor's story wasn't that he was doing cruel things, it was just that those cruel things felt goofy and flat compared to even the cruel things ambessa was doing for most of the season. i cite mandus from a machine for pigs a lot as a different possible comparison to viktor. mandus is another industrialist/inventor who ends up splitting his consciousness and decides the world is full of nothing but cruelty and that he knows better than everyone else and starts mutilating people and feeding them to each other to build a new world order. but even mandus, who traps people into forced-cannibalism, feels that he has more depth to him than viktor did for me by the end of the show. it may be how mandus's story is constructed and that his logic feels sadder than viktor's, or it may just be that again the writers had less time to deal with more storylines but! idk!
all in all i maintain that the machine herald arc was pretty disappointing and honestly kind of goofy/immature along with being like cringily ableist and relying on politically unsound tropes that mostly amount to 'hey watch out for communist zombies', so i'll be out here thinking about what might have made it land better for me
#impossible ask but no one talk to me about j*yvik it's like an unsalveagable endpoint to just trash a black woman#so 2 guys can have a gay moment#s2 spoilers#arcane#viktor

The second chapter of Save the Cat! is about genre, titled "Give me the same thing ... only different!". The general principle is one that I strongly agree with, even if I don't always practice it in my writing: you must know how and why things work in fiction, you must be a student of the realms you're writing in, you must give your own twists on clichés if you think you might be writing them, and must be familiar with clichés so that you don't end up boring people. Study things that are like the thing you're trying to create. Analyze them, take them apart, understand how they work or don't work.
But then a lot of the chapter is taken up with Snyder's own system of ten genres, and when I was reading it I wanted to just stop him and say "hey, what the fuck, did you even watch that movie?"
Also I laughed for like five minutes at him putting Schindler's List in the "Dude with a Problem" genre, even though I agree that according to his typology it completely fits.
I'm a huge fan of making up arbitrary categories and then stuffing things into them. I don't think it's often very useful, no, but it's fun, and when you're done shoving things into boxes, you can pull them back out, find a new set of boxes, and repeat the process. I'm not going to repeat Snyder's categories here, but I think they kind of suck, and don't accurately reflect genre as we understand them, and the whole thing would have been better off is it was taking story archetypes and saying why they work and then what the usual deviations from them were.
Here are two examples that I take issue with, among others. First, by his accounting Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a "Golden Fleece" movie, the kind of film centered around a hero's journey where what he ends up finding is, ultimately, himself, and every set piece along the way is important only in the way it relates to the hero's self-acceptance or whatever.
No. Wrong. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is very very clearly a "Buddy Love" under this system. Look at this fucking image:
Could this DVD cover make this any more obvious? Literally all the promotional material is like this. It even says in the book that most "Buddy Love" movies start with the "buddies" disliking each other, and that their relationship is central to the movie. And if Snyder is getting this wrong, what else is he getting wrong about his own system?
Example two. I'm just going to quote it in full:
Now look at The Matrix and compare and contrast it with the Disney/Pixar hit Monsters, Inc. Yup. Same movie.
Fucking what do you mean.
Under this system of genres, Monsters, Inc. is very clearly another "Buddy Love" movie. There's a kid they have to deal with, but most of the movie is grounded in the relationship between Mike and Sulley. Like, what's the low point of the whole movie? They get banished to the Himalayas and then have a big fight! It's about their relationship to each other!
(I looked this up on the savethecat website and found an article claiming that it's an example of "Monster in the House", which is fucking stupid, because what's the monster and what's the house? Just does not apply. The child is takes the role of the "monster" for such a small amount of the movie, then they're looking after her and trying to return her home, and even before that it's not relatable as a monster to the audience. Blake Snyder didn't write the article, so maybe he had something different in mind.)
Meanwhile, The Matrix most closely falls into either "Dude with a Problem" (ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances) or "Superhero" (extraordinary man in ordinary circumstances) and I would argue that it's actually neither of those because it's a goddamned hero's journey and those are their own thing and it makes no sense to try to split them into two parts because you don't get more explanatory power of what's working and what's not. His analysis of what he calls "Superhero" films also sucks for that reason and just totally misses the mark about what makes them tick.
So how are these the same movie? I don't know, it probably made sense to Blake Snyder. I have done my due diligence and searched for answers online, but haven't found much, just some weak ass defenses.
Also, I really hated that he says Chinatown and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? are basically the same movie because no shit. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is a parody of noir, and was adapted from the script for a never-produced third film in what was supposed to be a Chinatown trilogy. But even then, I don't get how you can say they're the same movie without pointing out the strong "Buddy Love" through line in Roger Rabbit!
This whole chapter was a total miss for me. Decent advice at the start that I've been hearing and preaching for a long time, but this typology sucks and he doesn't even seem to understand it (or the movies he's putting in it) very well. And since the typology sucks, it's a bad lens for understanding the underlying rules of writing, of story structure, the components of story, etc.

That earned a well-deserved eye roll but it was quickly gone with a chuckle as she heard his laugh. Listening, she could see the park before her, and gave occasional little sounds of confirmation to let him know that she was paying attention. "Sounds like you've been skipping leg day at the gym. You should start taking longer walks with Dolly. Might meet some more interesting people than me to bother on your days off." It was a small implanted suggestion that she hoped he would take into consideration.
"I know all you boys have your secrets. I know the CIA's and the Air forces in Nevada and I know you boys have your small subsection as well." Her time in Vegas came to mind and the finger one of the agents, a regular at the club she was dancing at, twitched at the memory of it. Though it had healed well, it still bothered her when the weather was cold and she couldn't fold it completely when making a fist. "If you do you might be partnered up with your Scully. If you are, I will need an invite to the wedding, after all, it was my idea that led you there, so you're welcome future Wally."
At hearing Wally, Dolly nuzzled against Elizabeth's chin wanting to listen in and let out a small ruff at the words he said. With a giggle, she put it on speaker mode so the pup could hear him clearer. "I should be thanking her for the company. And you for letting me watch her. The days seem to be flying by with her around. and she gives me an excuse to finally go exploring around the island like I wanted to." There was something to be said about the way that he was willing to talk about anything else than what she knew would be the biggest thorn in her side while trying to get the office ready for her to leave. So she let herself be distracted by him talking about his day. Letting a groan out at the simple mistakes some people made.
"I'm always preparing, there's a difference. It's like the condom motto, it's better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it." Cuddling against Dolly she added. "Dolly's different and you know it." Rolling her eyes she added. "Yes, I know they jump, but its better than being kicked by hind legs of a powerful animal or be thrown from one."
Oh, now that was promising. âWell itâs been a while since Iâve been out there, this sounds like the perfect excuse to travel for a bit.â Settling into a kore comfortable position, she sighed. As much as she poked fun at him for being tired, the recent uptake on hikes and walks with Dolly around was tiring her too. âThanks for that. Canât believe you were thinking about my case while working on yours.â
Hearing the all-familiar tone of a video call, she shifted around so she was still cuddling Dolly but she had become all too conscious about the fact that she was wearing his sweater. Hoped the fact that she was holding the phone out so Dolly was in front of her would help hide it. Knowing him, he would see it and use it as an excuse to tease her about possibly missing him, which she didn't. She only wore it because it was the coziest thing she had at the moment, he hadn't lied when he talked about how soft it was. It felt like a lot like a hug.
After settling into a position, she let it switch over and it took a moment to adjust seeing how much darker it was on his end. His green eyes shone like twinkling emerald stars, taking her off guard for a second. "The Roosevelt, she only lived there for a very short period of time. If anything she'd be at the Brentwood estate she was found at. I don't know why people can't let that poor woman be. She suffered enough when she was alive." Magnus was an old Hollywood lover and would waste no moment to show her the old movies or tell her what he knew about them. Most of her aliases came from those old movies. The laugh was a small one, it wasn't at him but at the idea of that hallway having a poltergeist. "If that were the case we would all already have one attached to each of us, this planet has been spinning for so long that if everyone became ghosts, by now we would all have one."
It felt like the lighthouse all over again, questions she thought she would be asked or had ever thought about before, that somehow only felt like a Wally thing. Whether it be the agent training or the curiosity he seemed to have, she would indulge for now, he had after all let his dog stay with her. Pondering the question over a moment, she thought about all the times that she thought she saw her dad in places over the years in her travels. When visiting parks that they had visited, mostly in California which he always loved. She remembered Jennifer telling him once that he might be John Muir reincarnated. With a sigh, she replied. "I read once that ghosts are a lot things to people. That sometimes they are a daydream or guilt or anger or even a memory. I think sometimes people wish for someone to be around so much that they can conjure their own ghosts. But," she laughed. "I also come from people who believe in fairies and merpeople and trolls, and ghosts too. So I think it would be silly for me to say that they don't exist in a way. And I guess you obviously do or else we wouldn't be having this conversation, right?"
There was that bit of hair that seemed to always be in his face when he let his hair down. She wanted to reach out and tuck behind his ear as she had before he left but couldn't. "Hey," there was something about not being able to look into his eyes unobstructed that seemed to bother her at the moment. "Sorry, but ," she pointed towards her face as if to mimic the tucking motion. "Can you... I don't know why but it's bugging me." It was then that she realized, as the memory of the last time he was there came back that not only was she sleeping in his hoodie, he had slept in her bed and she was cozying up to his dog while on the phone with him. Something strange stirred in her, but she ignored it chalking it up to just being tired. He'd fall asleep before she did though if she kept him talking. "So what's on the agenda for tomorrow?"
He grinned even though she couldn't see him he still did it. "I was getting to the hello just needed to catch you off guard first." His laughter was easy going and flowed like a river. "A National Park, not just any old one. Lassen Volcanic National Park. The meadows were freckled with wildflowers and those lakes are so crystal clear. I mean, I know I wasn't there for the sights but it was refreshing to see a familiar sight to home. Water wise anyway." He sighed and shook his head. "Truly unexpected way to start Monday morning with hearing grab your boots we going hiking. My legs are killing me though."
Hearing Liz on the other side of the call made him smile. He knew he'd missed her but it didn't click just how much until he heard her voice and consequently her teasing banter. He rolled his eyes as he chuckled and sighed. "He wishes he was this cool. Actually, we do have a UFO department did you know that? Fun fact of the night. I may just request a transfer. Thank you for the reminder. Alien life expert." Wally couldn't help but laugh at his own lame joke.
Getting the picture of his pup made him smile as he chuckled and talked to Dolly knowing she could hear him. "There's my precious girl." he cooed and saved the picture. "Thank you again for keeping her company. She looks very happy and very well loved." That pause made him open his eyes and frown. "That bad huh?" He wasn't sure if it was the tone of her voice or that pause that gave it away to him but he picked up on something in her voice. "For what its worth im glad you got my furry best friend to at least get a smile out of you." His dog was good at that. "Timezones you say, huh it's the first I'm hearing about it."
"Oh that tells me you have not had a moment to sit. Manoa Falls? It has a pretty name. Tell me about it. What did you like the most? A guard dog? Has she already found her new calling? Is this your way of breaking it to me? I'm glad that she's been having a ball of a week so far. I hope that when people asked if she was yours you said yes." He wouldn't have minded it either. Dolly took to Liz so he knew the dog liked her.
Wally sighed and knew that cop bullies usually tended to set their sights on a new target, the ones that came after them first. "I'm sorry. If there's anything I can do let me know." Just by the sound of her voice he knew she didn't want to dwell on this so he switched the topic. "Messy for sure. It turned out that the sheriff for the county lost the paperwork so Sunday when I landed had me at the station waiting for seven hours to see one page of a report that someone actually had saved. The rest needed to be requested from the San Diego office. Not only that but they had three suspects that all had alibis but stories didn't align correctly. So, now we have to trace all three of their footsteps. First guy had us at the National Park. The other was the aquarium and the last one which is my least favorite will have us at a strip club talking to some of the employees there. All this because no one thought to pull fingerprints. One deputy touched a bloody cloth with his hands." Wally sighed. "Upside is that they're all cooperating."
"Why are you so sure that Wildfire will hate you? Do you not trust me? If I had a doubt that she'd hurt you I wouldn't even have you consider this. It'll be like when you met Dolly. Wildfire will fall in love with you. Its not hard to do you know?" he rolled his eyes and laughed. "You are always thinking worst case scenarios. A pony? We can put you on ponies but technically Wildfire is a baby. You're scared of a little baby." His laughter wasn't mean spirited just amused. "It is a ranch. Fine we are adding feeding goats to the list. They jump up just FYI."
His sleepy little laughter rung out and nodded against his pillow. "Mhmm. The big old circle isn't there anymore but that's because city didn't let them build it. Said it was too big. But still there." Her laughter made him hum in content as he had forgotten how melodic a sound it was. "It's actually a funny story. The guy you were looking is friends with suspect number two. They just didn't put two and two together until I saw the report."
Wally switched to video as he had missed seeing her face but could use the pretense of seeing Dolly. He smiled sleepily as his eyes were the only thing visible. "They said it was Marilyn Monroe's ghost but I know that's false. She haunts the Roosevelt and we're so far away from that hotel. I think it's a poltergeist, might be, I hear rustling more than I see any figures pop up. I'm not scared," a little lie. "I just don't fuck with them. What if you inadvertently piss them off because you step on their favorite spot on the floor? And then you have one hanging on you and you have no idea how to begin to apologize." Shaking his head his eyes sparkled with amusement as he moved slightly so his long bang would fall to the side inside of on top of his eye. "Do you believe in them?"

Do you think people can change colors with time? Like entirely?
Do I think characters can change colors?
I've written about this before and my thoughts were that a character's color may evolve, but I'm hesitate to write that a character's color changes.
My take is that a character can hide his color or the color will emerge as the story progresses, but I don't think a character can simply change his color. For example, Elyes in my Wattpad BL, Bad Guy My Boss, started the series so dark that he was black.
But he has lightened up throughout the series.
He didn't go from a Black Brooder to a Blue Boy because he is still dark. He is just lighter than before even though his face might not always show it.
This was the same evolution Jane from The Trainee went through since he started the show such a dark blue that it came across as black.
But by the end, he lightened up.
But for Jack from Jack & Joker, it's been the opposite.
He got darker.
But the blue is still there.
In 7 Days Before Valentine, Sun finally realized he was a horrible person and changed for the better while Q came to terms with what was haunting him.
So they didn't flip colors, but helped each other evolve by learning to balance the good with the bad.
And the lesson of balance is something Black Brooder Haoran learned in Happy of the End. He wasn't going to change everything about himself because his traumatic past happened to him, but he was able to realize he could add color and happiness to his life moving forward.
In the first post when I wrote about the evolution of a color, I used Aoki from the Japanese version of My Love Mix-Up as an example of a color emerging over time since he moved from cream to yellow to orange
But even in the Thai version of My Love Mix-Up, Kongthap and Atom were a Blue Boy and Orange Oddity.
They combined their colors.
Then turned them into green when Atom was still trying to figure out his color since he went through the same evolution as his Japanese counterpart (yellow -> orange).
And they ended the series in brown.
Their color is still part of their couple colors, but they have blended them together because a character's true color will always be present like Johan from Fourever You.
He comes across as a Brown Boy.
But it's just because he doesn't want to show his Red Rascal-ness.
Even in The Loyal Pin where I think Blue Beauty Anin wears green when sad or life gets rough,
She is still blue.
And always has been.
So even though I have never watched nor played Pokemon and understand absolutely nothing about it, I think of a character's color like a Pokemon evolution. Things might change, but at their core, they are the same.
And that's part of the reason I like colors so much because they are philosophical in a sense. We can transform ourselves, but our core remains the same. We shouldn't want to change everything about ourselves, but we should want to be lighter. We shouldn't completely give up who we are for someone else, but should instead blend our lives with someone else's. We should strive for balance not extremism. We should be like Pokemon.
We should evolve.
#the colors mean things#and they mean we have to grow and evolve#we can't stay the same forever#but we don't completely change either#so if a character's color is changing#it's because their true color is emerging

Danny Fentonâs Field Trip to the Ghost Zone!
I have had the wonderful opportunity to write a fic inspired by the art of the wonderful @arisu-artnfics as part of @ecto-implosion. I ended up thinking it would be fun to bring in a trope from a completely different fandom, and write a Peter Parker Field Trip fic for Danny Fenton. Enjoy!
Chapter 4: Magic, Dragons, and Storms? Oh my!
Ao3 | First | Previous | Next
Technusâs voice sounded over the speaker. âWelcome to the Time Lost Lands, students! The home of Queen Dorathea and her subjects.â
âWoah is that a castle?â one of Dashâs classmates asked.
Dash looked out the window and sure enough, there was a massive medieval castle right out the window.
âIs that a dragon!â Dash couldnât help his yell as he spotted a large winged reptile climbing out from behind the castle.
Manson just grinned at him. âYep.â
The Dragon jumped from the tower and started flying towards them. Dash made a very manly noise of surprise. Definitely not a terrified squeal. (AN: This is a lie. He actually did a very good impression of a baby otter)
The Dragon was getting closer and closer, and everyone, other than the nerds, was getting progressively more freaked out. Fenton and his friends on the other hand didnât even flinch as the massive mythical creature landed on top of the bus.
âWHO DARES TRESPASS ON MY... Oh, hello Lady Samantha. How are you this fine morning.â Halfway through its booming yell the dragon transformed into a woman with long blond hair who smiled at Manson.
âHi Dora!â Manson smiled back. âOur class fell through a natural portal and weâre trying to get home. Think you can point us in the direction of the Far Frozen?â
âWell I can certainly give you directions, but Iâm afraid they wonât be much help. The next stop on your journey is Box Ghost and Lunch Ladyâs lair, which is currently only accessible through The Storm of Doom.â Dash could hear the capital letters in that name. He looked out into the Ghost Zone where the ghost was pointing and saw a patch of dark clouds. It didnât look like much, but something about it scared him.
âOh no, are they alright?â Fenton asked. He and his friends actually looked concerned.
Now Dash would admit that he wasnât the best at math, but if those four were actually scared of something after how relaxed they had been at everything else in this dimension, then Dash should probably be just as scared. (AN: Dash made an error in his calculations, he should have been far more scared than he was)
âLast I heard from them they were preparing their lair for the storm. So I assume they are doing alright, but we wonât know for sure until the storm passes,â the ghost queen said.
âSpeaking of which, that storm is heading this way!â Technusâs voice said over the bus speakers.
The other ghost, Dora, nodded. âYes, I have been working to prepare the castle and move my citizens inside for the storm. You and yours are welcome to shelter with us Lady Sam.â
Manson and her friends share a look. âThe last thing we want is to be stuck in The Storm of Doom.â Valarie said.
Fenton and Foley both nodded. âYeah, the castle is probably one of the safest places to ride it out. I vote we take Dora up on her offer,â Fenton said.
âHang on just a minute!â Mr. Lancer interrupted. âSince when were the four of you in charge!â
Foley shrugged. âHey, Technus!â he said, turning to the front of the bus. âWhat are the odds on us surviving if we try and fly through The Storm of Doom?â
âMy current calculations indicate a 5% chance of immediate death.â
Mr Lancerâs eyes widened. âWell thatâs not too bad,â he managed to stammer out, but Technus kept going.
âA 30% chance of your classmates' blood boiling in their veins. A 24% chance of their brains freezing solid. A 4% chance of death by electrocution. A 10% chance of death by poisonous gasses. A 7% chance of spaghettification. A 9% chance of death by eldritch madness, 6% chance of Danny, Valarie, and I being the only survivors, 3% chance of you and Sam also surviving, and a 2% chance of more than half of your classmates surviving. The odds of everyone surviving is less than 0.01% and statistically insignificant, so I rounded it out.â Technus sounded way too cheerful to be discussing their, apparently very probable, deaths.
Mr. Lancerâs face had gotten paler and paler as the ghost spoke. He stumbled into his seat, Foley just smirking at him. âSo, do you want to do that? Or do you want to spend the night in a very secure castle and not die a horrible death?â
âBesides,â Fenton held up a glowing green post-it note that he had gotten from... Dash had no idea where he had gotten it from, âtime is apparently moving at a two to one ratio to earth right now, so every two hours we spend here only one is passing on earth. So we have plenty of time.â No one bothered to ask him how he knew that.
Mr Lancer just nodded and slumped farther into the bus seat.
Manson turned back to the ghost dragon lady floating outside the bus and smiled at her, bowing at the waist. âWe humbly accept your offer of shelter, Queen Dorathea of the Time Lost Lands.â
The Ghost, Queen Dorathea, nodded back at Manson. âThe Time Lost Lands do not forget those who helped us find our path to the future, you and yours will always be able to find shelter in our walls, Lady Samantha.â
The solemness that had fallen over the group hung for a moment, before Manson straightened and smiled at the ghost. âThanks Dora, I really appreciate it!â
âOf course Sam! Iâm always glad to have you stop by! Have your vehicle land in the field by the stables. It should be safe from the storm there.â
They did as ordered, and the bus came to a stop next to a stable with, were those unicorns? (Star would later inform him that they were actually alicorns.)
They all hopped out of the bus and looked around at the castle. It was even more impressive up close. The walls absolutely towered over them, and they made Dash feel very small.
Off to the side he could see Fenton and his friends talking to Mr. Lancer, but they were too quiet for him to hear what they were saying. He wasnât gonna have to wait long to find out what they were talking about though, since Mr. Lancer called them all to gather around.
âAlright class. Miss Manson and Mr. Foley are going to go find out how long we will have to wait out the storm. In the meantime, I encourage you all to eat your lunches. If you were planning to buy lunch at the planetarium please raise your hand, Mr. Fenton has offered to hand out Fenton Sustenance Crackersâą to anyone without a pre-packed lunch.â
Dash felt his lunch money in his pocket and winced, he didnât exactly want to take Fentonâs charity, but he had worked up quite the appetite since they had fallen into the Ghost Zone, so he raised his hand. Next to him, Kwan raised his hand too.
Fenton slowly made his way around the group and passed the crackers out. When he approached the two jocks Dash was surprised to see that they were literal crackers, like a saltine. For some reason he had been expecting more. Fenton smirked at him and split the cracker in half, handing one half to each of them. Dash stared at it.
âIs this really it?â he asked.
Fenton just smiled. âYep, trust me, thatâs all youâre gonna need.â
Dash shared a look with Kwan as Fenton continued onto the rest of the group. Kwan just shrugged at him and the two inspected the crackers they had been handed. It looked like a normal cracker, for the most part. Dash was pretty sure the slightly green hue was just the lighting, but he still hesitated.
Dashâs stomach rumbled and he shrugged. It was better than nothing. He tossed the cracker into his mouth.
It tasted strange, both citrusy and bland, while also tasting like absolutely nothing. The taste was nothing compared to what happened when he swallowed though. He could feel the cracker slide down his throat and into his stomach, and then expand.
âOh thatâs really weird,â Kwan said with a shudder.
âYou get used to it!â Fenton yelled from across the field.
Dash shuddered, he really, really hoped he never did. He would give Fenton one thing though, the crackers certainly worked. His stomach felt like he had just eaten an entire 16â pizza by himself.
He joined the other students as they sat in the grass eating and talking. For a moment he forgot that they werenât just hanging out on the football field back at Casper High. Manson and Foley returning with the green skinned ghost queen broke the illusion though.
The group hurried over to Fenton, and Valarie. Dash didnât recognize what Valarie and Danny did, that the group were only avoiding breaking into a sprint to not cause a panic.
Dash was just close enough to over hear their whispered conversation.
âDanny we have bad news,â Manson said.
âReally bad news. The stormâs drifted further than expected. The Core is heading straight for us,â Foley sounded scared, and that scared Dash. The look on Fentonâs face pushed him from scared to terrified.
Fenton stood up from where he had been leaning against the bus, straightening and turning to the ghostly queen who had offered them shelter. âQueen Dorathea, how may I be of service to you and your people.â
The Queen bowed her head to Fenton. âYour friends have agreed to assist the royal mage in raising a shield around the castle. But I fear that without your power they will be unable to outlast the storm.â The queen made eye contact with Fenton âI ask for your aid in this, K-â
Fenton interrupted the queen. âJust Danny right now, Dora.â Fenton looked over at the rest of the class, who were obviously trying to listen in to their conversation. He made brief eye contact with Dash before turning back to Queen Dorathea. âBut you will have my assistance in any way you require it.â
Fenton turned to Valerie. âCome on, letâs go let Lancer know whatâs going on.â He turned back to the Ghost and bowed. âWe'll be back soon.â
They hurried over to Mr. Lancer. Dash wasnât close enough to hear what was said, but he could see the way Lancer tried to argue with Fenton only for him to stand firm. Eventually Lancer slumped and seemed to give permission.
Fenton grabbed his bag and made his way back to his friends and the queen. âAlright, letâs go. Val, you got things covered here?â
She nodded, before pulling Fenton and the others into a quick hug. Then they walked away, leaving the class whispering behind them.
There was no sun in the ghost zone but it certainly felt like it was setting as the green sky grew darker and the howling noise of the storm began to grow louder and louder.
Dash and the other A-Listers watched as the storm rolled over them, the clouds covering the sky completely. The clouds seemed to whisper to him and Dash couldnât help but be drawn to them. He felt himself stand up and, not hearing his friends call his name, started walking away.
Val smacked him over the back of the head. Hard.
Dash felt dazed and confused. When had he stood up? Where had he been walking to?
âYeah, donât look at the storm. Itâs not the weather you really have to be worried about.â
Instinctively Dash looked back up at the storm. Val smacked him again.
âDonât look at it idiot. Got it?â Dash nodded rapidly. âGood. Now get back to your friends. You scared them.â
Dash looked back over his shoulder. They really did look terrified.
He quickly walks back to them. âSorry guys, I don't know what happened.â
Paulinaâs voice shook. âDonât do that again.â
âYou scared us man,â Kwan said. "It was like you couldnât hear us.â
Dash almost looked back up at the whispering clouds again. But he caught himself, and looked down at the ground instead. âI donât think I could.â He whispered.
They sat in silence, intentionally not looking at the storm.
There was a deep ring that echoed through the castle, and voices raised in a haunting chant. All around them a glowing green dome raised to block out the storm, the whispers in the storm becoming muffled and drowned out by the chanting.
âLook! up there!â Star said, pointing up to the castle walls. Dash followed her finger to where four figures were standing silhouetted against the bright green of the shield.
Three of the figures were holding their arms up to the sky, green wisps of magic trailing out from their hands and stretching out to the dome above them, pulsing in time with the chanting. The fourth figure had his hands on the shoulders of two of the others, their hair seeming to glow with the lighting.
âIs that Fenton and the others?â Star asked.
âYep,â Valarie said. Dash jumped. He hadn't seen her walk up behind them. âThem and the royal mage.â
âSince when could they do magic?â Paulina asked.
âSam and Tucker have been studying for a while. Danny too, but he doesn't have as much talent in it. Heâs so powerful though that it doesn't matter much in the long run. He can just brute force a lot of things.â
She turned to look at them, making eye contact with Dash in particular. âYou should all be grateful you haven't bothered them since freshman year. Sam could turn you into a frog and Danny could separate your soul from your body with just a word. As for Tucker⊠letâs just say that weâre all glad he stays focused on technomancy.â
Dash felt queasy. "Did you ever learn anything?â He asked, morbidly curious.
Valarie just shrugged. âIt's not my specialty. I know some of the theory, but not much more than that.â She grinned and pulled a very big ray gun out of her purse. âBesides, I'm more of a gun gal anyway.â
Kwan squeaked and Dash barely kept himself from doing the same.
âHowâd you get that to fit in your purse like that?â Star asked.
âThere are some benefits to having magic friends.â Val grinned at them again, before sobering slightly and gesturing back towards the bus. âNow come on, we fixed up the bus so that people can sleep in it.â
Dash and the others followed her to the bus. The backs of the bench seats had been laid down flat and someone had found blankets and pillows from somewhere, turning the seats into makeshift cots.
âClaim a bed and get some sleep if you can. It's gonna be a long night.â
Dash had a hard time sleeping on the makeshift cot. Not necessarily because it was uncomfortable, but more because his mind was too full. The green glow and unending haunting chanting wasnât helping either. Though it was definitely preferable to the alternative. The way he had almost walked off into the storm terrified him.
He got up from the bed and quietly made his way out of the bus.
Val was sitting outside on a wooden stool that had been pulled from somewhere. She had her gun balanced on her knees. and was staring up at where her friends were still chanting on the castle wall.
âHow are you so calm?" he asked. âAll of this is absolutely crazy, and yet you're so calm. How?â
Valarie just sat there for a long moment. âThere's not much I can say other than 'you get used to it,'â she finally said. âDanny Sam and Tucker, they've been there since the very beginning, since the portal opened in his parents lab.â She glanced at him. âIt's hard to keep up with the rest of them sometimes. They're all so in sync and I joined them so much later, but I'm nothing if not stubborn, so I keep up with them anyway.â
âSo this whole time Fenton and the others have been befriending the ghosts and learning magic and and... I don't even know what else.â
Valerie's laugh was humorless. âYeah you really don't know what else Dash. And I'm not going to tell you.â
âWhy not!â
âWhy would I Dash? Why would I tell you a secret that isn't even mine when you bullied Danny and ostracized me back in freshman year. Why do you think Dash?â Val shook her head. âIt's not my place to tell people, and even if it was, you'd never be someone I'd tell anyway.â
Dash had nothing he could say in response.
Valerie turned back to watch the castle walls. âGo back to bed Dash.â
He did as told, but he didn't get much sleep that night.

I don't write much anymore because when i read books or even posts on tumblr, i am left in such awe of their writing that i wonder if I'll ever be able to write as well. How am i supposed to translate my thoughts into words when i feel like other people do it better than me. My own feelings and emotions that i want to portray onto the world are so complex and disordered in my brain that i fear I'll never be able to put them into actual words and sentences. But they are there and they exist and they long so deeply to be understood. Sometimes ill read these snippets of thoughts from other people and i will relate to that and also feel like i could have never put that feeling into better words. Then another dilema arises in which i feel like as much as i am made of a compilation of different thoughts and feelings that many people also feel, which one person will understand me as a whole. who will be willing to understand the depths of my soul and the tortuous monotone of my brain. i long soo deeply just to be understood
#relatable#i literally went off topic#i started with something else and ended with something completely different#sorry#my brain works a mile a minute and i absolutely cannot write#someone send help#get me off this app now#been scrolling for way too long

The babbling of human words became more familiar, the tone of reassurance a comfort for her. Words were lost, but tone could be felt...and the woman's tone was warm. It was far less harsh amongst these people than the trappers on the boat, to be sure. It was...nice listening to them talk, even if Stranger couldn't exactly understand them. The leader's mother seemed so kind and so warm. Would she and her human mother have gotten along? She hoped so.
If nothing else, knowing that there were people who lived with dragons like her made her feel less alone in the world. She felt far less isolated, despite meeting these people from within the bars of a cage.
Sunchaser leaned into Valka, rumbling at her and accepting the gesture she offered. The brothers, too, felt less alone upon meeting these people, especially Valka. They never knew about humans who lived with dragons and certainly no one who was anything like Stranger. Granted, Valka wasn't completely feral like they were, so she likely lived with dragons when she was much older unlike Stranger who was taken in as a child.
Looking over the older woman's shoulder, Stranger peered at Toothless and Seabreak sitting next to one another. Though she rejected his offer to play, she was glad to see the alpha treating herself and her brothers with patience, kindness, and acceptance.
Though...seeing the branch in Toothless's mouth gave her an idea. Ever since she was young, she had an instinct to convey her thoughts in any way she could, including visually. Sometimes some stray flowers could stain on stone walls, sometimes a stray branch allowed the sand to become a veritable canvas.
None of the other dragons had this instinct...so maybe that was something uniquely human for her. Maybe...maybe in place of words, she could communicate with pictures!
Getting up and shaking herself, her dragonskin wrappings crinkling with the sudden movement, Stranger quickly scrambled away, leaving her meal on the nearest rock, to find a suitable branch. One not too big, not too small...one with a blunt end and a narrow end.
Approaching Toothless once she had found a suitable branch, she squinted at him. This wouldn't be her best work, given that it's just meant to be a demonstration, but it would have to do.
Warbling at Toothless to stay still, Stranger immediately got to work, starting with his face. She used the blunt end of the branch for the outline and shape and the narrow end for the smaller details, like his eyes, nose, and the little spines on his forehead. She'd drawn her family enough times to know the shape of them by heart, even if Toothless was a little different. He had more appendages on his head than they did and his ears were much longer. He wasn't as smooth as they were, but his shape was similar enough that this was easy for her.
Occasionally, she would have to pause to approach him, being sure not to touch him without permission to count the number of spines on his feet or the number of points in his fins on her fingers. She could really only comfortably count to ten. She could count higher than that, but that was difficult. Thankfully, she didn't have to with Toothless.
It took a bit of time, but she finished with a satisfactory rumble in her throat, only taking one moment to observe the symbol on Toothless's prosthetic before etching it in with the narrow end of the branch and deciding she was finished.
Carefully, she laid the branch down across his likeness's mouth to complete it, mirroring the dragon holding it now as she turned to the humans with a small warble. Do you like it? Did I do a good job?
At the offer of the stick, Toothless accepted, gingerly picking it up in his mouth.
He plopped down next to Seabreak, trying to convey that he was grateful.
Hiccup waited, turned away, only looking forward again once he felt the dragon's nose press into his palm. Stepping closer, he began to stroke the dragon's head. "I know it can be hard, but maybe we can help your sister, and the three of you." Glancing over at the woman, he looked back at the dragon in front of him. "I just wish we could...communicate better...but, we'll find a way..."
Valka gave the girl a soft smile as she pulled away.
Her eyes widened slightly as the girl spoke another Norse word. "Oh...no, it's-it's perfectly alright, lass..." She turned to Sunchaser, holding her hand out to him, using a method she learned under the Bewilderbeast to offer him some comfort as well. "It looks like you four are quite close, yes?"
Hiccup made his way back over to them. "Is she alright?"
"Yes, she seems better. She might now a few more words than we think, actually, which is great news."
"Yeah?" Hand to his chin, he got an idea. "What if we taught her our language? Then, then we can see what her story really is, what she and these dragons are looking for?"

Something I've been thinking a lot about lately is how everyone thought Egon had gone insane. What Happened that made them think that. They've fought a gigantic Stay Puft Marshmellow Man TWICE (counting the 2009 video game because iirc it's canon? Correct me if I'm wrong), fought an interdimensional god, fought a blood thirsty ruler that killed thousands and was hated by all that was trapped in a painting (and managed to get in to beat him by making THE STATUE OF LIBERTY start walking down the street with slime that reacted purely based on vibes), found an underground abandoned transit system full of the moodslime, had a bathtub try to eat Dana and her baby, fought a giant murderous black widow lady, fought the fisherman ghost who turned an entire hotel floor into the bottom of a ocean, and that's not even mentioning them getting trapped on an island that randomly raised up from underwater that had been abandoned for decades created by Ivor Shandor who worshipped Gozer. So what did he do or say that made everyone else think he'd gone insane?? All I can think is maybe he was acting strange / eratic before, but he's always been like that to some degree.
I don't know. It's something that I've been thinking about. The correct answer is 'it's not that deep and they needed a reason that the others weren't together anymore and weren't aware of Egons death or know what was going on,' but also. What Was He Saying that prompted everyone, including Ray, to think he lost his mind when he'd been right almost every time before that.
I'm genuinely so curious as to what he was up to before this. What was he doing. What insane idea was working on prior to this or was he even working on anything at all??
Also want to clarify this post isn't negative đ I really love the newer movies and their lore / the newer storyline / characters, I just like thinking about small stupid things like this. Gives me something to think about / speculate about / figure out an answer to.
#ghostbusters#egon spengler#nikolas posts#I have so many thoughts on it because I've just been rewatching the two movies on loop for the past few days.#All we got was Ray saying that he'd started talking about the end of the world (IIRC) and that he went insane and took everything#when he eventually left to deal with it on his own#which for the record it's extremely impressive that he would've stopped Gozer from returning BY HIMSELF. The only reason it hadn't worked#was because of the electricity issue#Hiding all the traps and setting up the proton packs to fire at the hell pit?? Insanity. He's just on a complete different level of existin#Like they were aware of Ivor Shandor and his plans long before??? They found his ISLAND DEDICATED TO GOZER who had full intention of#BRINGING THEM BACK#it's really Really REALLY not this deep but I have thoughts and I wanted to share them. Maybe someone else might have an idea I#couldn't think of or might have something to add.#I guess it could be a 'they beat Gozer once and assumed they were gone' but that wasn't the first time Gozer 'died' so??#if I missed something Please tell me. I haven't watched the newer movies as much as the older ones (I grew up watching them / playing#the game so I'm more familiar with the older lore and haven't had the chance to rewatch the newer ones 1000 times over unfortunately)#so it's entirely possible I missed something#I'd think maybe it was just because they were older but I really don't think thats the case. I have reasoning for it but I need to do#the math to make sure I'm getting the ages right by the time AfterLife happens.#really need to make a chart / timeline of all the events that happened and what year / month / day they happened. That's a project#for tomorrow perhaps.#anyways if anyones reading this sorry for the insane rambling and congrats for making it to the end#also this post isn't negative I adore the newer movies so much. I love them a lot and I genuinely don't really care about this at all#just a thing to think / ponder / speculate about if that makes sense#I enjoy thinking about stupid irrelevant stuff like this#so so so many thoughts

literally to present the world with a better version of you which could mean facing your future and and forgetting past mistakes or finally settling on a brand new path while they both stare at ticket stubs from a film they saw together (literally they both kept the tickets...) and then they promptly throw away the ticket stubs as though they've just been burnt because they catch themselves doing something terrible - thinking about each other. (literally they both kept the tickets but then absolutely did not think about why they'd kept the tickets, because as if they've reached a point where they'll allow themselves to realise that maybe it's possible for them to enjoy each other's company yet. and then them throwing away the tickets is them being like nope refusing to think about why I kept this it never happened i definitely did not willingly engage in recreational activity with dan humphrey/blair waldorf and then i definitely definitely definitely did not keep the evidence it just didn't happen none of it happened i will not think about it ticket gone means no more thoughts on the matter okay case closed moving on time to go visit serena...)
#AND THEN THEY BOTH LITERALLY GO VISIT SERENA#gg voice while dan is walking out the door to see serena â and forgetting past mistakesâ blair looking at her resume blair walks into seren#but a new year doesn'#sn't wipe away old problems#dan&serena proceed to lock themselves into the same dance they've been doing since high school and it's#blair's words that are a significant part of breaking dan specifically out of it#and then blair with her resume trying to figure out where she belongs in the world and her terror at the thought of becoming her mother lea#s to her plotting and scheming for something she doesn't actually want that much#and it's in talking to dan that she starts to let herself make plans for her life based on who she is and what she actually wants to be#rather than planning her future to run from the fears that have haunted her her whole life#it's about how they've always seen each other the mistakes theyve made what they're afraid of#but also the beauty they're forced to admit exists in their enemy/frenemy (depending on the day)#so it's like now they're talking and they're showing each other how they see each other and it's so very different from how anybody else se#es them and it's these pictures that are completely different but completely accurate that help them break the patterns of their pasts#in that the newness the difference allows for the realisation of âyoure not what you wereâ and the accuracy is like i know you we'll show e#ch other what we actually are we see each other#okay now i'm#just rambling but it's them running away from the fact that they enjoyed each other's company and then proceeding to spend the episode trap#ped in patterns they've been trapped in forever until they help each other realise that they don't have to be trapped forever and then they#end the episode beginning to actually face the future and settle on a new path when they go see another movie together#okay done now so sorry this is insanely long help

' huh ?! oh , no --- ! it's not that i don't think you're strong enough to hold him or anything ! ' he sweats , he frets in place ! ' i just --- i-if somehow he did turn into a bother ... ! it'd be wrong to keep you holding him forever ! '
because , especially after asking how to hold him , would sakura have known how to hand him off or put him down ?! there was the idea that wiz might have been heavier in his mind than he really was , too --- the occasional night of being practically suffocated by wiz's entire body on his face as he tried to sleep had lent itself to things .
' wiz usually has a good sense for people , though ... ! ' he nervously hesitates , then mildly continues on : ' maybe even better than me , aha ... '
after all , how many times had wiz tried to protect him from someone dangerous before he even understood that they were a danger ? likewise , maybe the people that he could burrow himself into and still feel completely , utterly safe beside , were different from daisuke's own ideas , if not fears and worries of them .
--- still , the only one who'd end up transforming just from something like a hug and cuddle wasn't wiz , but his owner .
' um , do animals not usually like you , sakura-san ... ? ' it doesn't take long for daisuke to anxiously shoo away his own question --- he didn't want sakura to find more offense in things somehow and end up growling at him like a disturbed animal herself . ' it can depend on the animal or its personality , sometimes , but most of the time , as long as you're patient and gentle ... and willing to take care of them a little , then i don't think there's any reason that you couldn't be --- ! '
because even if he didn't actually know whatever it was he was apparently supposed to know , ( yanno --- ? ) he wanted to at least believe in that much ; in sakura's capabilities if not the entirety of her own self . anyone that could hold wiz while he slept could have been trusted with just about anything ...
( ... anything ? )
' er --- wha ... ? ' all of the sudden , his cheeks inflame . it's only now that he seems to realize the way sakura's pointedly looking at him . it's in the next instant too that he practically bursts with volume . ' oh , sorry !! did i say something weird ?! i didn't mean anything by it ! really ... ! ' stupid , stupid ! ' of course it's nice for him ! i mean , i-it's probably amazing ?! i just ... s-sorry , i'll be right back ... ! '
he can hear wiz's head pop up with a small , curious : kyuu ? and the ensuing animal thrash to break out of sakura's arms . all the while , his shoes slam against the pavement as he starts to turn rapid corners . he's let his guard down --- whether he really was or whether he wasn't about to , what would he do if he transformed ... ?! then again , maybe it was better to just let it come ? even as he tells himself not to think about anything , even as he tries to run away , the thoughts still come in a buzzing barrage , bursting past every wall and flooding his mind , his body and his heart . wanting to be held too , wanting to be able to hold someone , anyone , even just once --- there was no way he could have ever admit anything like that . some things were easier for an animal ; simpler , and despite the sharpening whet of his teeth in his mouth , or the painful split at his shoulders giving way to folded black wings , his laments remained all too human .
( i've gotta find someplace to hide --- ! )
a cursory thought and survey of his surroundings interrupted by the crying sound of wiz fast-racing towards him . daisuke --- dark's shoulder's jump . ' no , wiz --- ! ' any amount of his melancholy instantly turns into a silent scream of anxiety --- his heart leaps from a sprint to an even more painful race . ' don't come here ! go somewhere else ! ' if wiz had already left sakura , then --- ! ' you're going to lead sakura-san right towards me --- !! '
He thinks, and it should...do something, probably, but it doesnâtâreally and truly, she is almost entirely focused on the little rabbit in her arms. It probably isnât really fair to focus onâim like this, but she canât entirely help it, either.
The idea that a rabbit would be heavy for her is just as outta the blue as the allergy question, though, enough to make Haruka raise an eyebrow in genuine disbelief; âDâya really think itâs possible forâim to get too heavy for me?â
Is there somethinâ else heâs worryinâ about?? She canât help but be confused as all shit; âcause sure, she ainât exactly the poster-perfect example of knowinâ what the hell to do in just about every situtation possible, but geez! Sheâs muscles and strength all overâsheâs trained this body ofâerâs for years, dammit!!âso how the hell can he stand there and worry about somethinâ like a rabbitâs weight???
âHe canât even be but, what, a coupleâa kilograms? I can handle thatâhonest.â
(And if she sounds a little desperate adding that on, shut up about it; most of itâs eclipsed by a bit more offense, too, anyway, so may âs well focus on that.)
â...âpeople he really likesâ, though...â All the offense leaves her in a second at the thought, the rest of her thought dying with her voice; heâs decided sheâs one ofâem? One of the people he not just likes, but really likes?
â...Iâdâve never thought that I could be. IâIâve never been, yanno...â
Liked. She spent fifteen years not being liked, being hated, by everyone aroundâer. Moving here to Makochi has been somethinâ else in terms of all that, of course, and even meetinâ Dai has been, too, but...sheâd have never considered something like this. Sheâd never even imagined that she would one day be holdinâ someone, something, so intent to be close to her that theyâre digginâ into her hold, small white paws pressinâ and pushinâ with a determination she didnât even think a rabbit could have. He even headbutts her, too, his fuzzy head thumping against her chest before he finally seems to get comfortable, all his movement stoppinâ and just...just laying there, in her arms, right up against her...
Itâsâ Heâs soâ
She doesnât know what itâs like. But... She likes it. A lot.
âI wonât do that stuff, then.â She promises, even if it is a little more than half-distracted. âBut âm glad I ainât doinâ it wrong already, too.â
Not that she meant to add that out loud, but she doesnât mind too much that she did (what could she mind, right now?). His follow-up, though, confuses her a bit, her mismatched brows joining together outta confusion as she glances at him.
âWhaddya mean by that?â She asksânot accusing, and nowhere near the realm of anger. She genuinely just doesnât know what he means, especially with his own tone; Whatâs he sound sad for? Does he want Wiz back already, or is he...?
âIf heâs lookinâ like heâll sleep, doesnât it mean that it is nice forâim?â
#*ïŸâ° IC. â±#CANON.#cherriedrage#THE GLANCE AT HIM WAS A ONE SHOT KILL. đđđđ#HE WASN'T EXPECTING IT!!!!!!! HE THUGHT SHE WAS LOOKING AT WIZ!!!!!!! There was a murder and I accidentally solved it by a) being an easy/fun/oblivious target for a mean girl and b) being a completionist who knew we werenât making headway in murder a but was too damn nosy about murder b (which was murder a but Iâm face blind so I straight up didnât realize)
#ra speaks#personal#dreams#going to go drive for a few hours now bueee#byeeee*#it was at an eating disorder camp ??? I wasnât going there but I was there as like. idk a diversity hire? to talk about trees?#anyways mean girl murderer straight up orchestrated this other girls killing ace attorney villain style#and had like half the other girls in camp in on it but blackmailed/etc. to keep quiet.#and I was involved bc I think??? I knew damn well one of the girls was straight up lying bc I knew where she was bc we were tree talking#but she said she was somewhere else and wouldnât budge on her testimony#anyways mean girl a pretended to be my âfriendâ and wanted to âhelp me prove her innocenceâ#anyways we ended up finding a (supposedly different and much older) body somewhere else#idk why she showed me maybe she was like. bragging???#and my dumbass completely trusted mean girl bc idk dream logic so it seemed irrelevant to the case#until my nosiness brought it up in court and someone smarter than me started putting the pieces together#like hey we know this other kid is dead bc of blood/whatever but we donât have a body. what do you MEAN you found a body???#me: idk man it seemed way to old and didnât look relevant to this case and I didnât know if it was something to bring up w an archeologist#anyways mean girl got got. other girls were color coded fairy folk??? whose parents were pissed but bound by law to not intervene???#and then my alarm went off

idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.
